EU Regulations Spark Dispute with Tech Giants Over AI Assistant Integration

The European Commission is at odds with Alphabet and Apple over the future of AI assistants, a clash stemming from the immense advantage the two companies hold due to their control over billions of smartphones worldwide.

According to market research firm Omdia, there are approximately 5 billion actively used Android phones and iPhones globally. As AI applications become more widespread and specialized, these tech giants are enhancing their own AI assistants to perform complex tasks, moving beyond simple question-and-answer functions.

The European Commission, however, wants other virtual assistants to have equal prominence and accessibility on mobile devices as Alphabet's Gemini and Apple's Siri. Under the Digital Markets Act, a set of regulations for large tech firms that took effect in the EU in 2023, Alphabet has been mandated to open its Android platform to wider access by other AI applications by July 2027.

The EU regulator believes these rules will foster fair competition within the AI industry. Omdia estimates that around 427 million iPhones and Android devices in Europe fall under this new regulatory framework.

Both Alphabet and Apple have argued that opening their platforms could create significant privacy and security vulnerabilities. In June, Apple announced that its next-generation Siri AI assistant would not launch on iPhones and iPads in the EU due to restrictions imposed by the Digital Markets Act.

Experts generally agree that allowing external services access to the core operating systems of Apple and Alphabet could pose risks to system security and user privacy. However, some experts question whether privacy is the genuine primary concern behind Alphabet's opposition to the EU rules.

Carly Schroeder, Senior Counsel and Director of the AI and Human Rights Project at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, stated in an interview, "I think we can't take these tech companies at their word. We need to examine whether they have consistently prioritized privacy, or if they are suddenly invoking it as a reason because a new regulation threatens their interests."
