Jeff Bezos's investment firm, Bezos Expeditions, has taken a stake in UK-based technology company CuspAI, a firm leveraging artificial intelligence to develop novel materials.

The company has also announced new collaborations with NVIDIA and other industry leaders, aiming to discover critical new materials for the semiconductor sector and other fields.

This venture is part of a growing wave of technology companies using AI to solve complex challenges in the physical industrial world.

CuspAI has secured $450 million in a new funding round, valuing the company at $2.6 billion. The round was led by Kleiner Perkins and NEA, with significant participation from Bezos Expeditions. Other new investors include Gladstone Brook Capital, Luke Capital, Advanced Micro Devices's corporate venture arm AMD Ventures, and the UK's National Security Strategic Investment Fund.

The company uses AI to simulate the properties of potential new materials, sifting through vast combinations to identify promising candidates for real-world applications, thereby drastically reducing the need for extensive physical lab testing.

In a statement, Kleiner Perkins partner Josh Cohen noted that breakthroughs in most technologies fundamentally rely on new materials. He stated that current bottlenecks in areas like low-cost carbon capture, semiconductor manufacturing, and water purification are often due to a lack of the right materials, a problem CuspAI's intelligent discovery platform is designed to solve.

Building an AI-Powered Future for Physical Industries

CuspAI exemplifies the trend of AI companies focusing on tangible industrial applications.

Bezos himself founded Prometheus in 2025, a company with $12 billion in funding and a $41 billion valuation, which is also focused on using AI for invention and engineering in the physical world.

Headquartered in the UK, CuspAI plans to open a new office in Singapore and expand its research and development teams in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, and the United States.

The company has launched a collaborative system called the AI Materials Foundry. This platform integrates its AI technology with data resources, physical laboratories, computing power, and top scientific talent to create a unified network for materials research and development.

NVIDIA is one of 45 partners providing computational infrastructure for this initiative. Meta Platforms' Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team is also part of the collaboration.

CuspAI CEO and co-founder Chad Edwards stated, "As AI reshapes physical industries, new materials will unlock new frontiers in semiconductors, energy, and advanced manufacturing. The AI Materials Foundry combines NVIDIA's accelerated computing foundation with world-class chemical and materials expertise to power the discovery of the next generation of new materials."
