A museum in the medieval Spanish town of Villena has been hit by a devastating robbery, with a collection of roughly 3,000-year-old gold artifacts—including bracelets, bowls, and bottles—snatched in a matter of minutes. The treasures, first unearthed in 1963 and dating back to around 1000 BC, are regarded as one of the most significant gold collections from the Bronze Age ever found, often compared to the items discovered in the royal tombs of Mycenae in Greece. Other gold pieces from different eras were also taken during the heist.

The theft took place in the early hours of Thursday, and the town's mayor, Fulgencio Cerdán, expressed his deep distress, stating, "We feel immense sorrow, I am trembling as I speak. This is part of our cultural heritage." Spain's Civil Guard is now investigating the incident, suspecting the involvement of professional criminals. This robbery follows a worrying pattern of similar museum thefts across Spain and other nations, including a high-profile heist at the Louvre last year, where historic French royal jewels were stolen.

The mayor detailed the sequence of events at a press conference, explaining that an alarm at the local sports center was triggered at 5:23 AM, immediately notifying police. Moments later, the museum's own alarm system was activated. The thieves arrived in two vehicles and gained entry through a window, swiftly making off with the valuable items within just three to four minutes. In their hasty escape, they dropped a small gold crown that had originally adorned a statue of the infant Jesus.

While the intrinsic gold value of the artifacts is estimated at up to €1.7 million (approximately $2 million), their historical significance makes them truly priceless, according to the mayor. Francisco Poyato, a colonel in Spain's Civil Guard, noted, "We cannot draw any conclusions yet, but we have all the visual evidence. We know multiple people and vehicles were involved, and we are currently analyzing all the information."
