South Korea's KOSPI Index Plunges 22.19% This Month, Closing at 6,595.45 Points

South Korea's KOSPI index experienced a sharp decline this month, dropping 1,881.03 points, or 22.19%, to close at 6,595.45 points. This marks the steepest single-month percentage decline since October 2008, ending a three-month winning streak.

This week, the index fell 95.17 points, or 1.42%, extending its losing streak to six consecutive weeks. Over the past six weeks, the KOSPI has accumulated a loss of 2,456.97 points, or 27.14%, which is the largest six-week percentage decline since the week ending March 20, 2020. It also represents the longest consecutive weekly losing streak since the week ending December 29, 2022, when the index fell for seven consecutive weeks. The index has declined in eight of the past nine weeks.

Today, however, the index surged 1,001.89 points, or 17.91%, marking its largest single-day point and percentage gains on record. This rally ended a three-day losing streak.

From its all-time closing high of 9,114.55 points, set on Monday, June 22, 2026, the KOSPI has fallen 27.64%. It is also down 27.64% from its 52-week high of 9,114.55 points, which was recorded on the same day. Conversely, the index is up 111.43% from its 52-week low of 3,119.41 points, set on Friday, August 1, 2025. Compared to 52 weeks ago, the index has risen 111.43%.

From its 2026 closing high of 9,114.55 points, achieved on Monday, June 22, 2026, the index has dropped 27.64%. From its 2026 closing low of 4,309.63 points, recorded on Friday, January 2, 2026, the index has gained 53.04%.

Year-to-date, the KOSPI has risen by 2,381.28 points, or 56.51%.
