Fuel Prices Set to Rise Tonight as Regulator Steps In

Effective from tonight, domestic gasoline and diesel prices will see a targeted increase, following fresh regulatory measures to temper the impact of surging global crude costs.

Since the last price adjustment on August 28, escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran have pushed international crude prices sharply higher, with an abnormal spike observed again in Middle East oil benchmarks. In response, authorities have implemented temporary price controls for domestic refined oil products, preserving the existing pricing mechanism framework while cushioning the domestic economy and consumer livelihoods from external shocks.

Under the current pricing formula, standard-grade gasoline and diesel would have risen by 435 yuan and 420 yuan per tonne respectively on September 11. After the intervention, the actual increases have been capped at 260 yuan and 250 yuan per tonne.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) will direct refiners and distributors to ramp up production and logistics to secure stable market supply. In parallel, regulators will intensify market oversight, cracking down on illegal practices such as failure to adhere to national pricing policies, with the goal of preserving orderly market conditions and safeguarding consumer interests.
