JPMorgan Advises Buying Wal-Mart After Steep Sell-Off

JPMorgan has identified a buying opportunity in Wal-Mart (WMT) following its worst trading session in four years, which occurred on August 3, 2026, in Chicago, Illinois. The investment bank maintains an Overweight rating on the retail giant, signaling confidence in its recovery prospects despite recent market turbulence.

The firm has adjusted its price target downward from $137 to $125, yet this revised figure still implies approximately 21% upside from Thursday's closing price. Analyst Christopher Horvers communicated this stance in a client note released on Friday, emphasizing that the recent decline has created a favorable entry point for investors.

Horvers stated, "We recommend buying. We believe this sell-off has run its course, and short sellers have already achieved the downside they anticipated. The company's operational trends are poised to improve, while other earnings growth drivers are accelerating. Looking ahead, the bearish thesis appears overly aggressive to us."

The short-selling argument primarily hinges on relative valuation comparisons, using discount stores and traditional supermarkets as benchmarks. This perspective rests on two key assumptions: first, that pricing inputs will not exhibit a delayed elasticity effect—a notion contradicting historical patterns—based solely on recent short-term data; and second, that Wal-Mart will need to navigate a high base effect from tariff refunds in 2027, potentially causing a temporary dip in its income statement.
