New AI Voice-Cloning Scam Alert: Practice the 3-Second Silence Before Answering Unknown Calls

Scammers are escalating their tactics with advanced AI technology, using voice samples to clone your identity and deceive your family and friends. By collecting just a brief recording of your voice, they can generate a synthetic version and use it to place fraudulent calls.

To combat this, the Beijing Public Security Bureau's news center has introduced a simple yet effective "three-second silence method." Upon receiving a call from an unknown number, if the caller remains silent, you should also refrain from speaking first. Instead, count silently for three seconds. If the caller stays quiet, hang up immediately. This precaution helps prevent AI systems from capturing your voice.

If the call connects to an AI-powered customer service robot, avoid making any sound and end the call right away. Otherwise, the scammer's system might detect your voice, initiate deceptive scripts, and transfer you to a live fraudster. This allows them to gather more audio samples, clone your voiceprint, and later impersonate you to ask your contacts for money transfers.

What other AI-crafted frauds should you watch out for?

Voice Cloning Impersonation

Fraudsters intentionally maintain silence for several seconds after a victim answers, prompting them to say "hello" or "who's this?" A few seconds of speech can be enough for AI to replicate your voiceprint, enabling identity theft and subsequent scams.

AI Investment and Financial Fraud

Criminals use AI programs to generate fake K-line charts and bullish news, fabricate videos of influencers or experts, and push "guaranteed profit" investment schemes to lure victims into transferring money or making deposits.

Deepfake Video Scams

By stealing photos or videos shared on social media, scammers use AI face-swapping models to impersonate your relatives, leaders, or clients. They then fabricate emergencies—such as car accidents, legal trouble requiring urgent funds, or pressing business payments—to extort money.

AI Romance and Dating Fraud

Scammers generate a "perfect partner" persona using AI to build long-term trust through conversations, then request money under various pretexts. Common excuses include sudden illness needing surgery fees, business capital shortages, or travel costs to meet in person.

Remember these five essential steps to protect your privacy and finances from AI-driven fraud. Always verify identities through alternative channels, never share sensitive information over unknown calls, be cautious of unsolicited investment advice, and immediately report suspicious activity to authorities.

Stay alert and share these tips with your loved ones to keep them safe from these evolving digital threats.
