Alphabet Plans Military AI Data Center on Christmas Island for Surveillance and Reconnaissance

Documents obtained by Reuters reveal that Alphabet is planning to build a large-scale artificial intelligence data center on Australia's remote Christmas Island, intended for both commercial and military applications. The project stems from a cloud computing cooperation agreement signed between Alphabet and the Australian Department of Defense in July 2025, marking a significant step in deepening military-tech collaboration between Australia and the U.S.

Located in the Indian Ocean approximately 220 miles from Indonesia, Christmas Island spans about 52 square miles. Military experts suggest the data center could serve as a critical node for future "AI-enabled command and control," supporting unmanned reconnaissance, target acquisition, and mission decision-making. Brian Clark, a former U.S. Navy strategist and current researcher at the Hudson Institute, stated, "Future warfare will rely on AI systems for cross-platform coordination, and this center will provide the necessary infrastructure."

Retired Australian Navy Commodore Peter Levy noted that the island's strategic location enables monitoring of key maritime routes such as the Sunda Strait, Lombok Strait, and Malacca Strait. Alphabet has applied for environmental permits and plans to lay a submarine cable connecting Christmas Island to Darwin, to be executed by U.S. military-exclusive contractor SubCom, which previously built communication lines for the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean.

Steve Pereira, Chairman of the Christmas Island Shire Council, stated that the local community is assessing the project's impact. With only about 1,600 residents, the island has a limited economy and communication infrastructure. He emphasized, "Residents support the plan on the condition that it creates jobs, improves infrastructure, and delivers tangible economic benefits."

The data center project extends Alphabet's three-year military cloud partnership with Australia, similar to a £400 million contract signed between the UK Ministry of Defence and Alphabet Cloud in September 2025 to enhance intelligence-sharing between the UK and the U.S. Neither Alphabet nor the Australian Department of Defense has publicly commented on the matter.
