China stock indices climb in morning trade as semiconductor chain rallies; Kweichow Moutai drops nearly 4%; Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Hang Seng Tech Index both rise over 1%

On August 17, Chinese A-shares experienced volatile gains in morning trade, with the three major benchmarks modestly edging higher at the open. The semiconductor supply chain saw a boost, with concepts like silicon wafers, indium phosphide, and fiberglass posting broad gains. The superhard materials sector saw a surge, while ChangXin Memory Technologies-related stocks were active. In contrast, the baijiu sector faced headwinds, with Kweichow Moutai Co.,Ltd. tumbling nearly 4%. Consumer discretionary and cultural media sectors also declined.

Hong Kong stocks opened higher and maintained gains, with the Hang Seng Index and Hang Seng Tech Index both rising over 1%. Tech stocks were broadly higher, with JD.com, Tencent, Alibaba, and Bilibili all moving upward. Memory chip stocks strengthened, with GigaDevice and Hua Hong Semiconductor leading the gains. In the bond market, government bond futures collectively declined. In commodities, China's domestic commodity futures saw widespread gains, with the containerized freight index surging 10%.

Key market trends:

A-shares: As of press time, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.15%, the Shenzhen Component Index gained 0.17%, and the ChiNext Index added 0.14%.

Hong Kong stocks: As of press time, the Hang Seng Index rose 1.38%, and the Hang Seng Tech Index increased 1.68%.

Bonds: Government bond futures were all lower, with the 30-year futures contract down 0.17%, the 10-year contract down 0.04%, the 5-year contract down 0.01%, and the 2-year contract down 0.01%.

Commodities: Domestic commodity futures were broadly higher. The containerized freight index surged 10%, crude oil rose over 4%, fuel oil and platinum gained over 3%, silver, coking coal, polysilicon, and coke each rose 2%, while palladium, copper, caustic soda, tin, rubber, and nickel were up over 1%. Other gainers included soymeal, lithium carbonate, hot-rolled coil, paper pulp, alumina, aluminum, asphalt, rebar, manganese silicon, rapeseed, glass, eggs, and stainless steel.

At 09:50, the semiconductor supply chain oscillated higher. Youyan New Materials hit the daily limit, Chipown Microelectronics rose over 10%, and Pucheng Components, Zhongke Feice, and ChangXin Technology each gained over 7%.

At 09:42, the PCB sector continued its strength from last week, with Huazheng New Materials hitting the daily limit, and Jinlu Electronics, Bomin Electronics, Shandong Fiberglass, Hongchang Electronics, and China Jushi following higher.

The glass substrate sector experienced a volatile rally, with Wogou Photoelectric hitting the daily limit, and Red Star Development, Aiisen, Caihong Shares, Liono Pharmaceutical, BOE A, and Kaesung Technology following.

At 09:38, the lab-grown diamond concept surged, with Huanghe Cyclone jumping to the daily limit, Huifeng Diamond rising over 10%, and SF Diamond, Liliang Diamond, Sinomach Precision, and World following higher.

The agricultural sector showed activity, with Jinjian Rice hitting the daily limit, and Qiule Seed, Shennong Seed, Kangnong Seed, Dunhuang Seed, and Shenzhen Grain Holdings following.

The CPO concept remained active, with Zhongshi Technology hitting a 20% daily limit for two consecutive sessions, Alaid rising over 10%, and Gongjin Shares, Taisheng Optics, Fuxin Technology, Tianfu Communication, and Changxin Optoelectronics among the gainers.

At 09:29, Kweichow Moutai Co.,Ltd. opened 3.5% lower, falling below the 1300 yuan mark. In news, the company released its 2026 semi-annual report, reporting net profit attributable to shareholders of 44.517 billion yuan for the first half, down 1.95% year-on-year. Based on Q1 net profit of 27.243 billion yuan and Q2 net profit of 17.247 billion yuan, Q2 net profit fell 36% quarter-over-quarter.

At 09:26, the Shanghai Composite Index opened 0.07% higher, and the ChiNext Index rose 0.18%. OCS, optical chips, and CPO concepts led gains, while precious metals and paper sectors were active. Consumer staples were weak, with baijiu stocks leading declines and CRO concepts pulling back.

At 09:21, the Hang Seng Index opened 0.74% higher at 25,303.41 points, and the Hang Seng Tech Index rose 1.14%. SenseTime gained over 7%, JD.com rose over 3%, and LENOVO GROUP and MINIMAX each added over 2%.
