The dual forces of conflict and extreme weather are pushing Asia to the brink of a food security crisis.
Risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft warned in a report released on Thursday that the Iran war has disrupted fuel and fertilizer supplies, while severe El Ni帽o-driven weather events further threaten regional agricultural output. Vulnerable nations such as India, Indonesia, and the Philippines face heightened risks of social unrest and political instability. The firm noted that rising food prices and supply shortages are widely recognized triggers for civil upheaval.
Uncontrolled wildfires are already raging in Indonesia, India's monsoon rainfall sits 15% below normal levels, and Thailand's sugar production is poised to decline. Protests have recently erupted in several countries. Meanwhile, hedge funds are treating the powerful El Ni帽o as a trading opportunity, betting on sharp swings in food prices.
War Hits Agricultural Upstream, Fuel and Fertilizer Flow Disrupted
The spillover effects of the Iran war have penetrated deep into the agricultural production chain. Fuel and fertilizer, core inputs for farming, face supply interruptions that directly elevate planting costs and food inflation pressures across Asia.
Verisk Maplecroft emphasized in its report that the severity lies in the closing window of opportunity--sowing and fertilization decisions in many key farming regions were made precisely during the peak of supply disruptions. "This means that even if geopolitical conditions improve in the coming months, the negative impacts may already be locked in," the firm stated.
Thailand's situation warrants particular attention. As an agricultural exporter heavily reliant on imported energy and fertilizer, Thailand faces mounting farmer debt burdens ahead of the next planting season.
El Ni帽o Devastates Regional Staple Production
The impact of extreme weather on Asian food output is equally significant. Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, is battling massive wildfires that severely disrupt harvests. India, the top global rice exporter, sees its monsoon rainfall 15% below average, markedly raising the risk of agricultural losses. Thai sugar production is also expected to drop substantially.
Verisk Maplecroft noted that "the effects are increasingly visible." The combined force of war and weather is stoking food inflation, and rising food costs have historically been a mature trigger for social unrest.
Hedge Funds Smell Opportunity, Bet on Volatile Grain Prices
Amid the looming crisis, certain hedge funds are viewing the super El Ni帽o as a rare trading window. The head of ZAMS Asset Management, a former trader at Balyasny Asset Management, indicated expectations that this El Ni帽o will create an "exceptionally rich alpha environment." Moreton Capital Partners is raising $500 million to make comprehensive bets on El Ni帽o's disruptive impact on grain prices.
Furthermore, Verisk Maplecroft's food security index shows that over half of the countries ranked at high or extreme risk also sit in the top two tiers of its predictive social unrest index, including India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Indonesia--all of which have recently witnessed protests.
"The data suggests that if food price and supply pressures intensify further, and governments are perceived as responding inadequately, these high-risk markets could experience turmoil and political instability," the report concluded.
