SK Hynix's US Share Offering Triggers Large-Scale Dollar Selling, Fueling the Won's 1% Surge Past 1500

The South Korean won recorded its strongest single-day performance in over a month on Wednesday, appreciating by approximately 1% against the US dollar and briefly breaking through the 1500 level. Market participants attribute the rapid appreciation not to macroeconomic data, but directly to large-scale US dollar selling triggered by the ongoing American Depositary Receipt (ADR) offering from the Korean chip giant, SK hynix.

On July 8th, the won strengthened to as high as 1498.1 per dollar, its highest level since May 29th. A report cited an individual familiar with the trading activity, stating that significant dollar forward selling related to SK hynix's ADR offering appeared in the market that day, becoming a major force driving the won's rapid ascent.

Concurrently, South Korea's Vice Finance Minister Moon Ji-sung indicated that the supply-demand dynamics in the USD/KRW market are expected to shift in the second half of the year as SK hynix completes its US share offering. This marks the first time an official has publicly linked recent exchange rate movements to this specific financing event.

$28.6 Billion Financing May Generate Massive Currency Conversion Demand

Earlier this week, SK hynix formally launched its US share offering, aiming to raise approximately 43 trillion won (around $28.6 billion), making it one of the largest global equity financings in recent years. Fueled by the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, the company received strong investor interest, with subscription indications reportedly reaching about $70 billion, far exceeding the offering size.

For the foreign exchange market, however, the direction of fund flows is of greater concern than the financing size alone. According to a prior report, SK hynix is expected to repatriate a portion of the dollar-denominated proceeds to South Korea around July 15th and convert them into won to pay for capital expenditures denominated in the local currency. This implies a substantial future transaction of selling dollars and buying won, prompting the market to position itself in advance in the forward market.

A report cited an informed source as stating, "The dollar forward selling in the market today is mainly related to the SK hynix ADR offering."

Market Trades on Expectations in Advance, Benefiting the Won

Regarding the impact of SK hynix's $28.6 billion US financing on the won's exchange rate, market views and official statements have reached a consensus. Brent Donnelly, President of Spectra Markets, explicitly noted that the transaction's essence is "new dollar equity financing for won-denominated capital expenditure." He argued that regardless of the company's specific hedging or settlement methods, the core logic remains an increase in dollar supply and a rise in won demand.

He advised traders not to overcomplicate the timing or swap details but to view it simply as a classic "sell dollars, buy won" event. He emphasized that even if only a portion of the funds is converted, it could significantly impact the USD/KRW market.

South Korean officials have also sent positive signals. Vice Finance Minister Moon Ji-sung stated that this financing would alter the supply-demand structure in the foreign exchange market in the second half, indicating the government's close attention to the supportive effect of capital repatriation on the exchange rate. This statement reinforced market expectations that regulators are inclined to align with corporate fund flows, further supporting the won's strength.
