Japan's NTT Docomo d Payment and Merpay Integrate with WeChat Pay, Enabling Direct QR Code Payments for Chinese Tourists

Nationwide d Payment and Merpay affiliated stores across Japan have begun supporting WeChat Pay. Merchant partners do not require additional equipment or complex procedures - they simply need to display a unified QR code to offer WeChat Pay as a new payment option. When WeChat Pay users scan the merchant's QR code, the system automatically handles currency conversion and processes the deduction from their account balance. Even stores in Japan that previously did not support WeChat Pay can now accept it as long as they are affiliated with the unified QR code system. Docomo and Merpay will collect transaction fees from WeChat Pay payments.

SoftBank's PayPay also announced earlier this month that WeChat Pay integration will be implemented across all nationwide PayPay member stores starting mid-September 2025 through the "HIVEX" platform (PayPay has supported Alipay since 2018). When users make mobile payments through PayPay QR codes, if the price of goods or services is entered in Japanese yen, it automatically converts to the relevant country or region's currency for payment, creating a more streamlined shopping experience.
