AstraZeneca's oral breast cancer medication has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration. This decision marks a significant win for the pharmaceutical giant, particularly after the agency's advisory committee previously cast a dissenting vote against the drug.

The therapy, known as camizestrant, was authorized through the accelerated approval pathway. It is designed to be used in combination with other anticancer treatments for patients battling gene-driven metastatic breast cancer. AstraZeneca has expressed confidence that camizestrant, which will be marketed under the brand name Etcamah, could eventually generate annual revenues exceeding $5 billion. However, Wall Street holds a more measured outlook, with surveyed analysts currently projecting sales of nearly $2.3 billion for the drug by 2032.

Earlier this year, the FDA's Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee voted against the medication, citing concerns that it did not deliver a "substantial benefit" to patients. Nevertheless, in Friday's approval announcement, the agency stated that this treatment would offer women with breast cancer an additional avenue for managing the disease. Etcamah functions as a hormonal therapy by preventing estrogen from stimulating cancer cells, thereby hindering their growth and proliferation.

The pharmaceutical company has confirmed that this oral medication is effective in delaying disease progression by more than six months. The drug is indicated for breast cancer patients who develop specific genetic mutations while undergoing endocrine therapy. Prior to starting treatment with Etcamah, patients must undergo an FDA-approved test to confirm they carry this particular mutation.

Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Pascal Soriot, AstraZeneca has introduced a robust portfolio of blockbuster oncology drugs. The company is striving to secure sustained growth from its cancer drug pipeline while simultaneously positioning itself in the highly competitive weight-loss medication market.
