BYD Poised to Reclaim Global EV Sales Crown from Tesla

Rising overseas shipments position BYD Company Limited to regain its status as the world's top-selling pure electric vehicle manufacturer, surpassing U.S. rival Tesla Motors.

Figures released on Wednesday show that BYD delivered 557,090 battery electric vehicles in the quarter ending June. Although this figure is lower than the same period last year, it is likely sufficient to overtake Tesla. Analysts project Tesla will report quarterly deliveries of approximately 396,500 units next week.

BYD first overtook Tesla in the fourth quarter of 2024 and maintained a significant lead throughout 2025. At that time, consumer sentiment, particularly in Europe, was affected by Elon Musk's political activities and his close association with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

However, Tesla reclaimed the top spot in the first quarter of this year. It outsold BYD by roughly 48,000 vehicles that quarter, as weak domestic demand weighed on BYD's sales in its home market.

BYD's total new energy vehicle sales across all types grew 5.5% year-on-year in June to 403,472 units. Approximately 43% of these sales came from international markets, highlighting the importance of its global expansion strategy.

Amid a fierce price war in the automotive sector, BYD is focusing on technological advancements to compete with rivals such as Geely Automobile and Xiaomi Corporation.
