Bank of England: Financial Sector Prepared for AI-Driven Cyber Threats as Mythos Model Gains Regulatory Attention

Major UK financial institutions have stated they are ready to face challenges linked to advanced artificial intelligence models, as cybersecurity risks associated with the technology escalate. The Bank of England and several large UK financial firms held a meeting on Wednesday to assess the potential impact of Anthropic's Mythos model on financial system operations and cybersecurity. Following the meeting, a cross-market operational resilience working group convened by the Bank of England released a statement indicating that participants discussed the challenges posed by "frontier AI" models and concluded that the financial services industry is prepared for the associated risks, as well as potential opportunities for growth and efficiency. The meeting included representatives from the UK Treasury, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), highlighting regulators' growing concern over the risk of AI-assisted cyber attacks. Market observers noted that as AI tools enhance capabilities in automating vulnerability discovery, attack simulation, and network penetration, the cybersecurity threats facing the financial industry are becoming increasingly complex. Richard Horne, head of the NCSC, stated that institutions need to boost their cyber defenses with a "tenfold sense of urgency." He indicated that AI is not currently considered a national security threat, but technological change combined with geopolitical tensions are collectively elevating systemic risks. He remarked, "We are in a 'perfect storm'—on one side, significant technological change, and on the other, escalating geopolitical tensions, with cybersecurity at the intersection." Regulatory attention is not limited to the UK; US financial institutions have also taken action. Several Wall Street banks are internally testing the Mythos model, following previous alerts from the Trump administration urging financial executives to take the model's capabilities seriously and use it to identify system vulnerabilities. Analysis suggests that AI in cybersecurity is exhibiting a "double-edged sword" effect, as it can be used both for offensive attacks and as a critical tool for enhancing defensive capabilities.
