Stories from the mountains

Life always has cracks, but that is also where the light shines in. In Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province, layers of towering mountains block out the noise of the outside world, as well as the paths that lead many children to the world beyond. Especially for children in difficult circumstances, they carry the weight of life prematurely at an age when they should be nurtured and protected.

Nine-year-old Xiaoying (pseudonym) is one such child. She and her younger brother can only rely on their elderly grandparents. Her grandfather tends sheep in the distant mountains, and her grandmother is chronically ill. The young girl manages to attend school while cooking for her grandmother and brother. After school, feeding the pigs, scattering corn kernels, planting potatoes, and cutting pig grass—these are all of her after-class time. Later, volunteers brought her to a "Children's Home." When she first arrived, she would sit quietly in a corner, unwilling to speak or make eye contact with anyone.

Change grew in silence. In the financial literacy classes at the Children's Home, she learned what "currency exchange" means, began saving money, and planning for the future. During the Winter Solstice activity, she learned to make dumplings and, for the first time at home, served a steaming bowl of dumplings to her grandmother. On a spring outing, she drew the most beautiful spring in her heart on paper—green grass, sunshine, and a little figure running with her brother. At summer camp, she carefully wrote her name for the first time and learned more Chinese characters. Every time, she looked forward to taking a hot shower in the bathroom at the Children's Home. From initial silence to now confidently sharing her stories in front of others, that once-quiet little girl is being gently lifted up by warm hands, little by little.

Life always has cracks, but that is where the light shines in. This "Children's Home" nestled in the village is a source of positive energy, helping everyone rediscover the direction of light.

Starting with "little magic coins," the world of mountain children becomes more colorful

Nine-year-old Xiaoxin is a third-grade student at a rural primary school in the mountainous areas of Sichuan. When volunteers visited the school and asked her, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Xiaoxin lowered her head and thought for a long time before whispering, "I don't know. I've never seen the outside world." These words left the volunteers on-site with mixed feelings—it's not that the children don't want to learn or dream, but that they simply lack the opportunities to see a bigger world and be seen by the world.

This June, during the "Huizhu Dream Building—2026 Financial Wisdom Town" charity project, Xiaoma (pseudonym) clutched a newly won "magic coin" and excitedly shouted out his "investment plan." It was the children's first time participating in a financial literacy carnival. Before this, their understanding of "money" was either "must save it and not dare to spend" or "spend all pocket money immediately upon receiving it." As for "where money comes from" or "how to plan it," very few had ever seriously thought about it.

That day, they had to "earn money" through squats and frog jumps, then pass "careful budgeting" to serve as a little shopkeeper, identify scams in "anti-fraud investigation," and plan a spring outing with a limited "budget"—each challenge taught knowledge not found in textbooks. "So running a small shop requires so much accounting!" "I learned to manage my pocket money wisely and mastered anti-fraud skills!" "Before, I only knew how to spend money—I never thought earning it took so much effort." As the activity wrapped up, these were the exclamations from many children. "No pain, no gain" was no longer just a phrase in a textbook but a lesson they experienced first-hand.

In the planning zone, the "Spring Outing Estimator" challenge allowed children to experience real-life consumption decisions. With a limited budget covering transportation, admission tickets, snacks, and souvenirs, they began to learn to make lists, prioritize, and make trade-offs. These seemingly simple exercises actually correspond to important abilities needed for future life. They give children confidence that through effort and planning, the future can be held in their own hands.

Beautiful things keep happening because of love

This summer, 230 Yi ethnic children experienced a holiday completely different from any before. Usually, summer vacations meant helping with farm work, doing homework, or running around in the wilderness. This time, the HSBC Foundation for Philanthropy, HSBC volunteers, and the Sichuan Haihui Poverty Alleviation Service Center jointly created a temporary "haven" for them, and the most impressive part for the children was the financial literacy class.

Volunteers from HSBC, in order to clearly explain the evolution history of currency, deliberately purchased a set of physical coins and banknotes at their own expense. When the real banknotes and coins from various periods and countries were laid out on the table, the children leaned in to look closely and couldn't resist reaching out to touch the paper textures and anti-counterfeit watermarks. In the past, they had only heard the concept of "money"; this time, they touched its real form across different eras and gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between money as a virtual symbol and the product of labor.

What surprised us most were the children's designs of "future currency," which showcased their most imaginative side. One child drew a huge circle filled with "0s" and proudly labeled it "1 billion yuan." Another drew a goat with a long string of "0s" added beside it, labeled "Goat Coin." Others sketched a "waist coin" with "anti-counterfeit marks" and "sharp edges," writing, "It can protect you in dangerous situations." Behind every drawing lies an unconstrained imagination about wealth and their homeland. Kindness from beyond the mountains flows in, while the innocence and ingenuity from within flow out—together, with the joint support of many forces, this land has taken on a different hue.

Walking with love: one act of kindness may change a future

Paying attention to the growth and development of rural children, lending a helping hand, and offering love—every bit of support you give can help children in the mountains participate in financial literacy activities, broadening their horizons and nurturing confident growth experiences. We believe that on the other side of the mountains, hope and dreams forever grow, and every act of love has the potential to change a child's future.
