Samsung Display announced on Wednesday that it has collaborated with U.S.-based Intel to develop a new technology that significantly reduces the power consumption of Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) displays, thereby extending the battery life of laptop computers.

The wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics stated that its SmartPower HDR technology enables laptop users to activate High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode, which can reduce power consumption by up to 22% compared to previous OLED displays.

HDR technology allows displays to present vivid images through brightness optimization.

Samsung Display explained in a statement, "Unlike traditional HDR mode, which consistently uses high voltage regardless of the content type—leading to unnecessary power waste—SmartPower HHR dynamically adjusts the voltage based on the characteristics of the content being displayed."

Specifically, the technology enables users to save up to 22% in power consumption during general tasks, such as web browsing, and up to 17% when playing high-resolution videos or games.

The company added, "With the growing popularity of AI-powered computers, this new technology is expected to significantly enhance battery efficiency and improve the High Dynamic Range (HDR) viewing experience."
