The Pudong Airport Phase 4 Expansion project has achieved a significant milestone with the official opening of the Airfield Zone Construction Workers' Town on the 6th. This new facility, a 2.0 version of the earlier workers' town, is designed to house and support the thousands of laborers building the airport's airfield area.

The 2.0 version of the town is located at 2805 Hebin West Road. It was jointly planned and constructed by Shanghai Airport Authority and eight participating units of the airfield engineering project. Spanning nearly 120,000 square meters, the town has already accommodated its first batch of over 1,000 airport construction workers. The airfield project is a crucial part of the Phase 4 expansion, involving key tasks such as runway systems, taxiway systems, and apron engineering.

To inspire the workers contributing to Shanghai's international aviation hub, the airport authority began planning this airfield construction workers' town last year at Hebin West Road. The town covers a total land area of 114,800 square meters and is divided into two main sections: a public service area and a construction living area. It can accommodate up to 4,000 workers at a time.

Unlike traditional, spartan construction site dormitories, the 2.0 town offers a higher standard of living. The residential areas primarily feature four-person rooms, each equipped with air conditioning and storage lockers, with thoughtful provisions for couples' rooms. The public areas feature lush greenery, and facilities for waste sorting, fire safety, and emergency exits are fully compliant with regulations.

In terms of amenities, the town centrally houses a "one-stop life service area". This area integrates dining, supermarket shopping, sports and leisure, and convenience services into a single hub. The public canteen and affordable supermarket offer a wide variety of goods at prices close to cost. The town management stated that the product selection in the canteen and supermarket was thoroughly researched based on worker demand, and operators are given zero rent in exchange for passing on the savings to the frontline workers.

The multi-functional service center provides facilities for fitness, board games, and other activities. Services like haircuts and convenient repairs are available on demand. During holidays such as Spring Festival, National Day, and Mid-Autumn Festival, professional art troupes are invited to perform, enriching the cultural life of the construction workers.

Shanghai Airport Authority has also collaborated with the city's Major Projects Office, Pudong New Area government, public security, and urban management departments to form a temporary community governance body for the town. A unified, professional property management company has been introduced to the public areas, and the airport's public security bureau has established a "Zhengyi Space" police office within the town.

The Phase 4 expansion of Pudong Airport mainly includes six major projects: the T3 terminal area, the airfield area, and a passenger rapid transit system. Once completed, it will meet the projected annual passenger traffic of 130 million at Pudong Airport by 2030. Construction began in January 2022 and is expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2028.

On July 23rd, the T3 terminal project achieved a critical milestone. The final "bird pillar" steel component of the international main terminal's steel roof was precisely hoisted into place. With this, all 17 "bird pillars" are now in position, forming the core support structure for the T3 terminal's bird-shaped design.
