On September 25, the 20,000 TEU container vessel "COSCO SHIPPING Libra" successfully completed its methanol dual-fuel retrofit and was delivered smoothly. This retrofit project set multiple industry records, representing not only the largest existing vessel methanol dual-fuel conversion globally to date, but also achieving the world's first simultaneous methanol dual-fuel retrofit of both main and auxiliary engines, as well as the first conversion of an 11-cylinder main engine to methanol dual-fuel power worldwide.

This project marks the first methanol dual-fuel retrofit inspection undertaken by China Classification Society (CCS), signifying another major technical breakthrough for CCS in the field of clean energy applications for ships. CCS placed high priority on this project, assembling an experienced project team to provide comprehensive technical support and services throughout the process.

Throughout the project, the CCS team worked closely with ship owners, shipyards, and design units, accurately identifying potential risks and quality control points during the retrofit process, establishing a solid foundation for efficient and safe project advancement.

The retrofit engineering work lasted over three months, coinciding with Shanghai experiencing its longest recorded continuous high-temperature weather, presenting unprecedented challenges for on-site construction and inspection work. Under the scorching heat conditions, the Shanghai branch's shipyard inspection team demonstrated exceptional professional competence and dedication. Working alongside shipyard engineering personnel on the front lines, they overcame multiple difficulties including harsh high-temperature conditions, tight schedules, and numerous emerging technical challenges.

The surveyors not only strictly followed regulatory standards in conducting inspections, ensuring quality and safety control at every retrofit stage, but also took proactive measures to help the shipyard analyze and resolve a series of technical bottlenecks encountered during installation and commissioning phases. This effectively ensured smooth progress at critical milestones and guaranteed high-quality project completion on schedule.

The successful methanol dual-fuel retrofit of COSCO SHIPPING Libra provides a highly valuable practical example for large existing vessels adopting clean energy, exploring effective pathways for emission reduction and decarbonization in the shipping industry. The successful completion of this project not only demonstrates CCS's strong technical capabilities and leading position in ship clean energy and emission reduction technology, but also provides concrete support for advancing "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" initiatives in the shipping industry.

CCS will continue to uphold its mission of "safety, environmental protection, creating value for customers and society," continuously refining technology and enhancing service capabilities to contribute ongoing support for green sustainable development of China's and the global shipping industry.
