A fire broke out unexpectedly on the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower. According to American media reports on March 16 local time, the USS Eisenhower caught fire on the 14th while undergoing maintenance at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia, resulting in injuries to several crew members.

Regarding the Middle East situation, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement on the 17th, declaring that both the IRGC and the Iranian military are fully prepared to deliver a forceful response to any acts of aggression or criminal behavior by adversaries. The statement indicated that enemy attempts to invade Iran through land and sea operations and seize Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf have already been thwarted. Should adversaries dare to make any reckless moves against Iran, they will undoubtedly face a decisive and fatal counterstrike, achieving nothing but humiliation and a strategic defeat.

Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), warned that Europe might only have approximately six weeks' worth of aviation fuel remaining. He stated plainly, "We are experiencing one of the largest energy crises in history."

Another US aircraft carrier has experienced a fire. On April 17, citing reports from the US Naval Institute News network, the USS Eisenhower caught fire this week during maintenance at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia.

The report referenced a US Navy statement: "A small fire occurred on the USS Eisenhower on the 14th. Ship personnel and workers at Norfolk Naval Shipyard... immediately contained and extinguished the fire. Three sailors received treatment from the ship's medical team, have fully recovered, and have returned to normal duty."

The report noted that the USS Eisenhower arrived at Norfolk Naval Shipyard for maintenance on January 8, 2025. It is currently unclear whether this fire will extend the carrier's maintenance period.

The USS Eisenhower is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with a displacement of approximately 100,000 tons. The carrier entered the shipyard for maintenance in January 2025, with plans including comprehensive upgrades to its propulsion system, crew habitability, combat systems, and aviation support capabilities.

Prior to the fire on the USS Eisenhower, another US carrier, the USS Ford, experienced a fire on March 12. A blaze started in the ship's laundry room, injuring three sailors. The fire was brought under control after several hours, but approximately 200 personnel were treated for injuries related to smoke inhalation. According to US media, the fire on the USS Ford lasted for over 30 hours.

The USS Ford's maritime deployment has entered its tenth month. It initially moved from the Mediterranean to Latin America to participate in military operations against Venezuela, and recently relocated from the Caribbean to the Middle East to take part in military activities concerning Iran.

It is reported that the USS Ford's current mission may extend until May, which is twice the length of a typical carrier deployment period. Recently, the carrier has been frequently plagued by malfunctions, including issues with approximately 650 clogged toilets onboard.

Previously, the US Navy denied reports of serious failures in the USS Ford's sanitation systems. A Navy statement said the ship's relevant systems are "operating within expected parameters" and have not impacted combat readiness or mission execution capability. "The toilet clogging incident was swiftly resolved by trained personnel, with the blockage lasting for a very short duration."

The International Energy Agency has issued a warning. On April 16 local time, IEA head Fatih Birol warned that Europe might only have around six weeks' supply of aviation fuel remaining. If Middle East tensions continue to disrupt oil supplies, flight cancellations in Europe could occur soon.

Fatih Birol emphasized that the conflict in the Middle East has led to increases in gasoline prices, natural gas prices, and electricity prices. He stated directly, "We are experiencing one of the largest energy crises in history."

In fact, this is not the first time Fatih Birol has warned about energy risks. In early April, he stated that the current global energy crisis is more severe than the crises of 1973, 1979, and 2022 combined. Simultaneously, Fatih Birol advised that countries should practice energy conservation as prudently as possible in the short term, as global energy markets might face a "Black April."

Jihad Azour, Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stated on the 16th that since the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran on February 28, the Middle East and North Africa—a crucial global economic corridor—have suffered severe multi-faceted impacts. Among the eight oil-exporting countries in the region affected by the conflict, five are projected to experience economic contraction by 2026.

The IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings are being held this week in Washington, D.C. Speaking at a press conference on the 16th, Azour told media that the Middle East conflict has disrupted energy markets, trade routes, and business confidence. Approximately one-fifth of global oil shipments and a significant volume of liquefied natural gas transit require passage through the Strait of Hormuz, where navigation is nearly at a standstill. Attacks and preemptive production shutdowns have reduced oil and gas output.

Azour said that besides oil and gas, about one-third of global seaborne fertilizer trade passes through this trade route. Gulf Cooperation Council countries account for over 40% of global sulfur exports and approximately 20% of ammonia and nitrogen fertilizer exports. Price increases for these commodities directly translate into higher food costs, affecting some of the most vulnerable populations in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, and parts of Africa.
