Q2 Sees $1.2B Institutional Influx into Strategy (MSTR.US) Amid Index Removal Concerns

Wall Street poured significant capital into Strategy (MSTR.US) during the second quarter, reflecting the market's engagement with the company during a pivotal strategic transition. Despite the enthusiastic buying activity from institutions, the dramatic shifts in internal capital allocation at Strategy (MSTR.US) are prompting investors to reassess its long-term viability as a proxy for Bitcoin exposure.

Data reveals that the top 15 major institutions collectively increased their positions by approximately $695 million. Specifically, 12 buying institutions boosted their holdings by around $1.3 billion, while three institutions trimmed approximately $609 million. Among the sellers, Capital Research Global Investors reduced its stake by roughly $462 million, UBS Financial Services (UBS.US) cut about $142 million, and Geode Capital Management decreased holdings by approximately $5 million. This divergence indicates that while overall inflows remain strong, the gap in opinion among leading institutions is widening.

The internal adjustments at Strategy (MSTR.US) are heightening market uncertainty. To bolster STRC (STRC.US), the company raised its annual dividend yield from 9% to 12%, shifted to bimonthly payments, and accumulated additional dollar reserves. However, STRC (STRC.US) shares continue to trade well below their par value, forcing the company to repurchase stock directly in the open market. Even with the support of high dividends and buybacks, STRC (STRC.US) failed to break through the $95 mark this week, and while management is committed to restoring par value, the challenges persist.

Index compilation pressures are further amplifying the risk. Based on the August 7 reference price, as of the end of June, Vanguard Investment Management held approximately $1.54 billion, Vanguard Capital Management held about $1.49 billion, BlackRock Institutional Trust (BLK.US) held roughly $1.27 billion, and State Street Investment Management (STT.US) held approximately $753 million. Should MSCI (MSCI.US) adjust the index status of Strategy (MSTR.US) after the second quarter, passive demand could weaken significantly. Given Strategy (MSTR.US)'s heavy reliance on issuing common stock, the combination of potential exclusion and shifts in its financing model would pose a severe test for institutional holdings.
