Weekly US Jobless Claims Edge Up to 209,000, Boosting Odds of September Fed Rate Pause Amid Low Inflation

After a prolonged period hovering near historic lows, the number of Americans filing for initial unemployment benefits experienced a modest increase last week. Data from the US Labor Department revealed that for the week ending August 8th, initial jobless claims rose by 9,000 to reach 209,000. This figure surpassed the median forecast of 202,000 from a survey of economists. Meanwhile, continuing claims, which serve as a metric for those receiving unemployment benefits, fell to 1.78 million in the prior week.

The uptick in applications may be attributed to typical summer volatility, during which seasonal employment patterns and holiday timings often distort the data. Economists will likely need to observe more than a single week's worth of figures before reassessing the stability of the recent labor market. The four-week moving average of initial claims, a measure that smooths out weekly fluctuations, remained unchanged at 199,000.

The US government reported last week that nonfarm payrolls decreased by 23,000 in the previous month, with data for May and June also being revised downward. Employment growth often exhibits a tendency to slow during the summer months, a phenomenon economists link to difficulties in adjusting data for seasonal swings tied to the end of the academic year. This year, jobless claims have consistently remained at the lower end of their range between 189,000 and 230,000.

A recent survey by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) further substantiates the labor market's stability, indicating that a measure of small business employment rebounded in July after four consecutive months of decline. The combination of a stable labor market and signs of moderate inflation, if sustained, could allow the Federal Reserve to hold interest rates steady in September. The Fed maintained its benchmark overnight interest rate within the range of 3.50% to 3.75% last month, though three members of the policy-setting committee dissented, favoring a quarter-point rate increase.
