JD.com's Home Appliance Division Faces Challenges, Not as Rosy as Perceived

From an enviable scale and prominence to an 8.4% year-on-year decline in core home appliance business revenue in Q1 2026, the actual situation for JD.com's home appliance division may not be as bright as it appears on the surface.

In recent years, due to channel transformation leading to multi-channel fragmentation, specialized home appliance retailers have generally faced difficulties. However, most home appliance distributors widely believe that JD.com's home appliance division, with its extensive layout and market penetration, has achieved significant scale, possesses unique advantages in resisting market downturns, and can compete effectively with brand manufacturers.

In reality, this is merely a superficial gloss. While large scale and strong risk resistance are present, significant scale also brings its own set of challenges. Indeed, JD.com's home appliance division is not having an easy time. Although JD Retail achieved growth in both revenue and profit in Q1 2026, its core home appliance business still faces severe challenges.

The Predicament of JD.com's Home Appliance Division: Lackluster Growth As the core business segment of JD.com Inc., JD Retail is primarily divided into five major business units based on product categories and business models, with the Electronics & Home Appliances Business Unit being the most significant. Despite its massive scale and substantial influence, this segment has consistently operated at a loss.

According to Q1 2026 data, JD.com's revenue from "Electronics and Home Appliance Products" was 132.171 billion yuan, marking an 8.4% year-on-year decline, indicating weak growth in core categories like home appliances. In contrast, revenue from General Merchandise within the same JD Retail segment grew by 14.9% year-on-year.

The primary reason for this is the significant impact of the phase-out of national subsidy policies. Home appliance sales previously benefited from state subsidies, but the diminishing marginal effects of these policies led to a revenue growth rate for this category dropping to -12% in Q4 2025, failing to return to positive growth in Q1 2026.

Policy Drives Fluctuations: Immediate Effects Reviewing the performance trends of JD.com's Electronics and Home Appliances segment in recent years, it's evident that it is closely tied to national policies. Both the earlier growth momentum and the recent downturn and pressure have been driven by policy, demonstrating an immediate responsiveness to policy dividends.

Starting from Q3 2024, when national subsidies were first implemented, JD.com's revenue from Electronics and Home Appliance Products stopped declining and began to recover, achieving 2.7% positive growth. In the subsequent three quarters, the year-on-year revenue growth rate for this segment once surged to 15.8%, 17.1%, and 23.4%.

Corresponding to this fundamental performance of the Electronics and Home Appliances segment, JD.com's overall revenue returned to double-digit growth. From Q4 2024 to Q3 2025, JD.com's revenue growth rates were 13.37%, 15.78%, 22.4%, and 14.85% respectively. This clearly shows that the Electronics and Home Appliances segment's contribution to JD.com's revenue cannot be overlooked.

Subsidy Dividend Fades: Growth Anxiety However, while the "national subsidy" dividend temporarily alleviated growth anxiety for JD.com's core business, it also prematurely depleted market purchasing power for consumer electronics. As the marginal effects of the subsidy policy diminished, JD.com had to face a stark reality: when subsidies phase out, can other businesses take the baton and support the next growth cycle?

Objectively speaking, the "national subsidy" has not disappeared, but the decline in marginal utility is an undeniable fact. For JD.com, the anxiety is not about "lack of growth" but whether the "quality of growth" can shift from being policy-driven to efficiency-driven. The company is currently in a critical period of simultaneous adjustment and calibration.

Looking at JD Retail's business, it is mainly divided into two parts: Electronics & Home Appliance Products and General Merchandise. In Q1 2026, JD.com's revenue from Electronics & Home Appliance Products was 132.171 billion yuan, with a growth rate of -8.4%; revenue from General Merchandise was 112.648 billion yuan, growing 14.9% year-on-year. Within the same business segment, having both growing and declining areas inevitably creates pressure on the underperforming part.

Weak Consumption and Price Wars: Dual Pressures Behind the impressive scale of JD.com's home appliance division lies a reality similar to that of traditional home appliance companies: the impact of sluggish consumption. The home appliance industry as a whole faces a pattern of "online slowdown, offline divergence." The home appliance market experienced weak shipments in the first quarter, with sales of some categories plummeting and strong consumer wait-and-see sentiment, from which JD.com's home appliance division could not be immune.

Simultaneously, e-commerce platforms face two major issues. On one hand, continuous low-price marketing compresses profit margins, raising questions about whether the quality of products supplied for online channels is truly guaranteed. Issues like inflated specifications or reduced features in online products serve as examples. On the other hand, against the backdrop of consumption downgrading, demand for high-average-order-value categories has weakened. Home appliances are durable consumer goods with high unit prices and long decision cycles. Amid increased economic uncertainty, consumers are more inclined to postpone large expenditures, which similarly suppresses sales in JD.com's home appliance categories.

It must be acknowledged that JD.com's home appliance division is not enjoying the easy times some might envy. It is primarily constrained by factors such as policy phase-out, consumption downgrading, intense industry competition, and a relatively singular category structure. However, JD Group is attempting to alleviate pressure through ecosystem synergy, user operations, and new business expansion. Whether it can successfully break through the current challenges depends crucially on how JD.com's home appliance division adjusts its strategic approach in the current macroeconomic environment.
