Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. is exploring the possibility of sharing its Sunderland plant in the UK with CHERY AUTO, a move that could help alleviate concerns about the future of Britain's largest car manufacturing facility.

A non-binding memorandum of understanding announced Wednesday indicates that the plant could begin producing vehicles for the Chery brand as early as 2027. Nissan will retain ownership of the facility and continue to employ its workforce.

In May, Nissan announced plans to consolidate production at its Sunderland plant in northeast England down to a single line, leaving another production line idle.

Massimiliano Messina, head of Nissan's European business, stated: "We look forward to working with Chery International UK in the coming months to finalize a plan that is most beneficial for both companies."
