SoundHound AI Inc's stock plummeted 5.05% during Tuesday's intraday trading session, marking a significant reversal from its earlier gains. The decline occurred following the company's announcement of its agreement to acquire LivePerson for an equity value of $43 million.
The acquisition, which represents a 22% premium over LivePerson's 30-day volume-weighted average price, is designed to combine SoundHound's voice agentic AI with LivePerson's digital messaging capabilities. The combined company expects to create an end-to-end omnichannel conversational AI platform serving enterprise customers in more than 30 countries, with projected 2027 revenue of $350 million to $400 million and a combined cross-sell potential of $500 million.
Despite the strategic rationale for the acquisition, technical analysis indicates significant headwinds for SoundHound's stock. The company's chart shows it is working through a longer-term downtrend, with a death cross (50-day SMA below the 200-day SMA) that occurred in January signaling persistent bearish pressure. While the stock had shown strong short-term momentum, trading 23.2% above its 20-day simple moving average, it remains 8% below its 100-day SMA, and faces resistance around the $9.00 level. The moving average structure continues to present challenges, potentially contributing to the selling pressure observed during the session.
