General Motors' Chief Product Officer Details Focus on Passenger Vehicle Autonomous Driving Technology

General Motors has ceased operations of its dedicated autonomous taxi subsidiary, yet the company remains an active participant in the industry's competitive landscape. The automaker's Chief Product Officer, Sterling Anderson, who previously led Tesla's Autopilot program, provided insights into the company's current strategic direction.

In a recent interview, Anderson stated that the company's primary focus is currently on developing autonomous driving technology for passenger vehicles. He indicated that this same technological suite could, in the future, be adapted for use in driverless ride-hailing services. Anderson elaborated on General Motors's development approach, which involves deconstructing driving scenarios and implementing autonomous functions tailored to specific, real-world owner needs.

The development team's plan is to first achieve autonomous operation on long-distance highway stretches. Following this milestone, the technology's capabilities will be progressively expanded to cover major arterial roads and, subsequently, core urban areas.

Anderson expressed confidence that, given sufficient time, General Motors's autonomous system will operate reliably across a wide enough geographical area. At that point, he believes, launching a commercially viable autonomous taxi service will become a logical and seamless progression.

"Ultimately, the operational domains for passenger vehicle autonomy and autonomous taxis will completely overlap," he stated. "When we reach that stage, applying this technology to autonomous taxis will be a natural step for us."
