Uber in Advanced Discussions to Acquire Delivery Hero in Move That Could Reshape Global Food Delivery Landscape

Ride-hailing giant Uber is engaged in advanced discussions with German food delivery platform Delivery Hero regarding a potential acquisition, with a deal possible as early as this week. This transaction could significantly expand the global footprint of Uber Eats outside the United States.

Delivery Hero has confirmed it is in advanced talks with Uber regarding a potential takeover offer. According to informed sources, any deal could value Delivery Hero substantially higher than its recent trading price of around 36 euros per share. The company's share price has risen approximately 62% this year, giving it a market capitalization of roughly 112 billion euros.

Uber currently holds about a 24.99% stake in Delivery Hero and has increased its total economic interest to approximately 36.8% through derivatives. Uber had previously made an offer of 33 euros per share, but the market widely believes a higher price is necessary to secure a deal.

Should the acquisition succeed, Uber Eats would gain access to Delivery Hero's extensive network covering over 60 markets worldwide. However, the two companies have overlapping operations in parts of Europe and the Middle East, which could trigger antitrust scrutiny in multiple jurisdictions globally.

This potential deal comes at a time of accelerating consolidation within the global food delivery sector. DoorDash agreed to acquire the UK's Deliveroo last year, while Prosus purchased Just Eat Takeaway.com. Delivery Hero has recently been conducting a strategic review under pressure from shareholders. A key investor, hedge fund Aspex Management, had previously pushed for the founder's departure and called for more asset sales.
