Inflation Surge Driven by Iran Conflict Trump's desire for lower interest rates is unlikely to be realized as the war with Iran drives up prices. According to the Labor Department's Consumer Price Index, annualized inflation surged to 3.8% in April, reaching a three-year high. Producer prices also rose at their fastest pace in nearly three years in April, heightening inflation concerns. Principal Global Investors market strategist Christian Floro noted, "A more severe-than-expected inflation report presents the incoming Fed Chair with fresh questions about price stability and the timing of policy easing." 3. Shrinking Labor Force and Higher Tariffs Prior to the outbreak of the Iran war in February, the Fed was grappling with how to manage an economy with a shrinking labor pool and increased import tariffs. Labor Department data shows that over the past year, Trump's substantial cuts to immigration and mass deportations have removed more than 600,000 people from the U.S. workforce. Job growth has also sharply declined since Trump resumed office in January 2025, with almost no net increase during his second term. 4. Deep Internal Divisions at the Fed Warsh will take over a Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) that has been exceptionally polarized over the past two years. As FOMC Chair, Warsh leads the committee that sets key interest rates and wields significant influence over economic discussions. However, he holds only 1 vote out of 12 on monetary policy, meaning he must build consensus among other members to achieve his preferred outcomes. This has become more difficult in recent months. In May, the FOMC voted 8-4 to keep rates unchanged, marking the first time since 1992 that more than three officials dissented on a rate decision. 5. Legal Battles Warsh will also lead the Fed amid several legal challenges from the Trump administration, including a criminal investigation into outgoing Chair Powell, which is nearing completion. The Fed is also preparing for a Supreme Court ruling on whether the White House has the authority to dismiss Fed Governor Lisa Cook, a decision that will significantly impact the central bank's independence.
