Beijing Expands Online Drug Purchase Service with Health Insurance to Over 900 Pharmacies

Beijing has upgraded its health insurance drug purchase service, allowing insured individuals to use their personal medical insurance accounts to buy over-the-counter medications online through JD.com and Meituan platforms. The service now covers more than 900 designated pharmacies across the city.

According to the Beijing Municipal Healthcare Security Administration, 423 pharmacies were integrated into the online payment system this year. As of now, over 900 pharmacies in all 16 districts and the economic development zone support the service.

Currently, only non-prescription drugs are eligible for online purchase with health insurance. Users must log in to JD.com or Meituan, enter the dedicated health insurance drug purchase section, select a nearby designated pharmacy, and choose medications marked with a blue "health insurance" logo. After submitting the order, users confirm and authorize the transaction, then select "Beijing Health Insurance Personal Account Payment." Drug costs are covered by the insurance account, while delivery and packaging fees are paid out-of-pocket. Orders are delivered promptly after placement. If the insurance account balance is insufficient, the system will prompt a hybrid payment method combining insurance and self-payment.

The service also supports family sharing of health insurance accounts. To use this feature, both the primary insured and family members must be enrolled in Beijing's health insurance program and must complete a family sharing registration. This can be done online through the Beijing Health Insurance Public Service Platform or at district-level service centers. Once registered, family members can follow the same payment process as the primary insured when purchasing drugs on the two platforms.
