[Click to register] Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill said on October 14 that he is skeptical of market pricing that expects the Bank of England to raise interest rates by a cumulative 100 basis points over the coming year.

He believes the Bank of England still needs to take some action to adjust monetary policy, but it may not necessarily need to raise rates four consecutive times by 25 basis points each, as the market expects. Previously, Pill voted in favor of a rate hike at the September monetary policy meeting, while most members, including Governor Bailey, chose to keep rates unchanged to await further evidence of the impact of the Iran war on UK inflation.

Pill: Monetary policy needs adjustment, but four rate hikes may not be justified

Speaking at a Citigroup-hosted event on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meetings in Bangkok, Pill questioned the market's current pricing of the rate path. He stated that the Bank of England needs to ensure monetary policy is in the appropriate position, and the necessity of taking further action is becoming increasingly evident.

However, regarding the market's expectation of four cumulative rate hikes of 25 basis points each over the coming year, Pill expressed a more skeptical attitude. This statement indicates that although Pill believes UK inflation risks still require a monetary policy response, he does not fully agree with the magnitude of rate hikes currently priced in by the market.
