For months, President Trump's most senior advisors have reportedly tried and failed to convince him to use executive powers to regulate artificial intelligence. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's Michael Kratsios drafted an executive order this summer that would have established an AI watchdog modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

However, the draft order has now been shelved for weeks following a phone call between Mark Zuckerberg and Trump. Trump has frequently dismissed concerns about AI risks as a "scam" in recent times. One government official indicated that the White House is currently pushing major AI labs to collaborate on auditing their models.

A White House official said: "President Trump has made clear that he wants to cement American dominance in AI, and this administration is committed to delivering on that promise while protecting U.S. security."
