Iraq's federal government announced on the 17th that it will investigate a drone attack that targeted the private office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the region's intelligence chief on the same day.

The Kurdish authorities stated the drones were launched from Iranian territory, while Tehran has cautioned against falling for an "enemy conspiracy."

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has ordered the formation of an investigative committee to determine the origin and operators of the drones used in the attack on Barzani's office and the intelligence chief's home.

The Kurdistan Regional Government's security agency issued a statement claiming the assault originated from inside Iran, adding that there were no immediate reports of casualties. The statement did not specify whether the two drones struck their intended targets, and no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

In a social media post on the 17th, Barzani strongly condemned the drone strike, describing it as a perilous escalation that directly endangers the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.

Iran has urged the Iraqi Kurdistan authorities to be wary of possible "false flag" operations orchestrated by adversaries. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei called the attack on the Kurdish prime minister's office "highly suspicious."

Baghaei noted that Iraqi officials had previously warned of the presence of networks linked to foreign powers inside Iraq, which are involved in planning and executing "false flag" actions. Tehran also reiterated its consistent support for Iraq's security, stability, and territorial integrity.

During a phone call with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed the need to remain vigilant against "terrorist acts" that could undermine the friendly relations between the two nations, including this particular attack. He also stated on social media that no justification could excuse the assault on Barzani's office.

The Kurdistan Region has recently experienced a series of drone and rocket attacks. According to Agence France-Presse, Iran and its allied armed groups have repeatedly accused the Kurdish region of sheltering Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, which they claim pose a security threat.
