Recent research from Bank of America reveals the S&P 500 constituents that have experienced the most significant expansion in institutional ownership coverage over the past year. The data presents a clear trend: artificial intelligence (AI) and technology-related stocks dominate the list, indicating that strong investor enthusiasm for the AI sector continues to drive capital inflows. Leading by a wide margin is Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR.US), whose institutional ownership surged to 32% from just 7% a year ago, a substantial increase of 26 percentage points, marking the largest gain within the S&P 500. Other companies in the AI ecosystem and semiconductor sector, such as Broadcom (AVGO.US), Arista Networks (ANET.US), and Amphenol (APH.US), also saw substantial growth in institutional holdings, highlighting a broad shift of institutional capital towards AI infrastructure and data technology. Beyond core technology stocks, GE Vernova Inc. (GEV.US) and Gilead Sciences (GILD.US) also appeared on the list, suggesting that while investors are targeting high-growth areas, they are also diversifying across sectors to balance their portfolios for resilience. Major communication services firms like Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) and Netflix (NFLX.US) also attracted new institutional positions. The following is the list of stocks with the largest increases in institutional ownership coverage, as compiled by BofA Global Research, sorted by Seeking Alpha's Quant Rating: Arista Networks and AppLovin Corporation (APP.US) ranked highest, with Quant Ratings of 4.78 and 4.52 respectively, both receiving "Strong Buy" ratings; they were the only two stocks on the list with ratings above 3.5. Notably, Western Digital has surged 54.54% year-to-date, leading the list in performance; despite its neutral rating, GE Vernova has still gained 28.40% this year.
