SoftBank Eyes Record $11B+ Junk Bond Sale to Fund Additional OpenAI Investment

SoftBank Group is reportedly seeking to raise more than $11 billion through a junk bond sale, a move that would rank among the largest high-yield debt offerings ever recorded, according to people familiar with the matter. The Japanese conglomerate plans to issue $10 billion in dollar-denominated bonds across three tranches, along with €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in euro-denominated notes split into two tranches, the sources said, asking not to be identified because the information is private.

The proceeds from the bond sale will be used in part to fund a follow-up investment in OpenAI, which is expected to be finalized next month. SoftBank, already one of the world's most aggressive AI investors, has committed nearly $65 billion to OpenAI, making the commercial success of that bet increasingly critical to its future financial performance.

Standard & Poor's assigns SoftBank a BB+ rating, its highest speculative-grade designation. By comparison, Alphabet and Amazon, the largest corporate bond issuers globally in 2026, hold AA+ and AA ratings respectively, both above Japan's sovereign credit rating.
