Tech Titans Warn UN Security Council of Unchecked AI Dangers

On Wednesday, leading global artificial intelligence firms urged the United Nations Security Council to adopt a coordinated approach to govern the rapidly advancing technology. Claude AI developer Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei cautioned that without proper oversight, AI could pose a serious threat to all humanity.

A growing alarm suggests AI systems will soon be capable of iterating on themselves, potentially slipping beyond human control. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman advocated for international collaboration, stressing that the most critical AI decisions cannot be left solely to labs in San Francisco. He emphasized the need for democratic processes, with rules shaped collectively by governments accountable to their citizens.

Speaking to the Council, Canadian scientist Yoshua Bengio, co-chair of the UN's independent international scientific panel, stated, "The danger is real and imminent. The Security Council faces an unprecedented threat that no member state is willing to confront, one that no single nation can contain and that does not respect the borders we defend."
