Tasks That Artificial Intelligence Cannot Perform

During the May Day holiday, Tianjin was brimming with a celebratory atmosphere. Over 500 cultural and tourism activities took place across the city, filling streets and alleys with a lively and relaxing holiday vibe. But have you considered: who is behind this citywide sense of ease? With the widespread discussion of AI's arrival, some people wonder: will robots take over all jobs in the future? How much value do we, as carbon-based life forms, still hold? The answer is clear.

Tianjin's recently highlighted "Smart Water Management" project sounds advanced, featuring digital twins and integration with large models. By leveraging massive data, it equips the water management system with a powerful brain. By the 2025 flood season, drainage efficiency in the central urban area had significantly improved, demonstrating remarkable responsiveness. However, this capability was not achieved through AI's independent realization. There are no miracles that appear out of nowhere—it is the result of water management workers consistently staying on the front lines, collecting data, adjusting models, and conducting repeated drills. This human effort ensures the technology responds accurately during critical moments. Data is cultivated, and models are trained; each flood drill involves human correction of AI, infusing machine intelligence with human experience. While AI acts as a rapid executor, without this diligent groundwork, even the most advanced technology remains ineffective.

At the Jin-Cang Expressway expansion project site managed by China Railway Sixth Group, project manager Zhong Huidong exemplifies versatility. On one hand, his computer screen displays 3D simulation animations detailing the demolition of old bridges and the construction of new ones, all clearly planned with the support of BIM technology and 3D printing. This represents the capability of the new generation of builders. On the other hand, the construction site is adjacent to the Beijing-Shanghai Railway, a critical artery where train operations cannot be halted, yet work must proceed. The construction area is divided into numerous grids, with safety responsibilities assigned to individuals. Zhong Huidong remarked, "There is no room for carelessness in engineering." Each worker is equipped with an intelligent intercom integrated with high-precision positioning and warning functions; if machinery or personnel cross boundaries, the system instantly alerts. Technology serves as an aid, but human responsibility forms the strongest defense. While smart systems can identify risk points, assessing the severity of risks and deciding how to proceed always relies on human courage and accountability. Simulations on screens can be rerun countless times, but every decision on the construction site must be correct the first time.

At 3 p.m. near the Joy Shopping Park in Hedong District, food delivery rider Zhao Cheng, after completing an order, was not rushing to the next one but instead squatting to help a fellow rider repair their vehicle. The 42-year-old veteran, with five years of delivery experience, has mastered bike repair skills. Whether it's a loose chain, tight brakes, or a flat tire, he fixes them on the spot when he encounters them—without charge, as it has become a habit. In an era where algorithms calculate "every minute of delivery," machines can plan the most efficient routes but cannot compute the compassion of lending a hand. AI can mimic human language but cannot replicate the innate kindness ingrained in people.

Sun Yang, a 36-year-old ride-hailing driver, was once an anxious newcomer four years ago but has now become a confidante for many passengers. She can detect a student's exhaustion from a few coughs and sense suppressed emotions from quiet sobs. On one occasion, she encountered a young woman who, after a breakup, wanted to go to the Haihe River. Sun Yang persuaded her throughout the ride to return home, turned off her ride-hailing app, and waited silently outside the building until she saw the motion-sensor lights illuminate floor by floor, ensuring the passenger's safety before leaving. AI can accurately recognize voice commands but cannot interpret the silent pleas for help behind quietness. Genuine human empathy and attentive care are what truly touch hearts.

The value of labor is embodied and heartfelt. Times change, tools evolve—from manual work to AI integration—but some things remain constant. The meticulous dedication and warm-heartedness of laborers will always be this city's greatest asset. A tribute to every laborer.
