European Gas Prices Climb as Traders Focus on Refilling Storage Before Winter

With only a few weeks remaining before the start of the heating season, traders are turning their attention to filling natural gas storage facilities, driving prices higher across Europe. Benchmark futures rose as much as 2.8% during Friday's trading session, following several days of declines that mirrored weakness in the crude oil market. While diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran continue to move forward, unusually low storage inventories remain the central theme driving the natural gas market.

Reports indicate that Germany is planning to significantly expand its existing tender programs, offering payments to suppliers in exchange for securing winter gas supplies. This initiative is designed to incentivize traders to fill the nation's storage facilities. Global gas supply remains tight, and any signal of increased purchasing from Europe is likely to provide further support for prices.

Since the outbreak of the conflict, European natural gas futures have more than doubled in value, with prices earlier this month reaching their highest levels since late 2022. Ongoing hostilities in the Middle East have removed roughly one-fifth of the world's liquefied natural gas supply from the market, and there are few indications that LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz will resume anytime soon.

"The Strait of Hormuz remains the primary near-term bottleneck for LNG, but the long-term damage to Qatar's production capacity means that simply reopening the strait will not be enough to restore supply to normal levels," wrote intelligence analyst Patricio Alvarez in a research note.

On the diplomatic front, President Trump has revealed that he is on the verge of making a "major decision" regarding whether to escalate strikes against Tehran once again. Meanwhile, the United States is planning to hold meetings with Persian Gulf nations in New York on the sidelines of next week's United Nations General Assembly.
