Hong Kong Stocks Open Sharply Lower as Hang Seng Index Drops 2.09%, Tech Index Falls 1.87%

Hong Kong's three major indices all opened lower today, with the Hang Seng Index falling 2.09% to 24,099.73 points, the Hang Seng Tech Index dropping 1.87%, and the China Enterprises Index declining 1.72%.

On the mainland Chinese stock front, tech and internet stocks broadly declined, with Baidu dropping over 5% and JD.com falling nearly 3%.

The optical communications sector opened higher, with Zhongji Innolight rising more than 3%.

Chinese brokerage stocks broadly advanced, with Everbright Securities gaining over 6%.

Auto stocks weakened, with XPeng declining more than 2%.

In US markets, the 30-year Treasury yield rose to 5.648% on Wednesday, hitting a new 24-year high, as rising bond yields offset other positive developments.

On Thursday, the Institute for Supply Management reported that the September ISM Manufacturing PMI came in at 54.5, below the expected 55 and August's 54.6.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 20 points (+0.04%) to close at 50,926 points after an initial gain followed by a pullback. The Nasdaq gained 10 points (+0.04%) to 26,871 points, while the S&P 500 added 14 points.

Rumors that China is restricting refined oil exports drove oil prices higher, with Brent crude surging 4% and New York crude rising 2.7%.

Core PCE data released on Wednesday showed a 0.2% increase in August, below the expected 0.3%.

Interest rate futures indicate that the probability of a rate hike in October has fallen to 35%.
