Crypto Climbs Amid Turmoil as Korean Chip Stocks Plunge 7%

Global markets are showing a clear divergence as digital assets push higher despite macroeconomic headwinds, while South Korean semiconductor shares suffer a sharp selloff that has reignited concerns over tech valuations. Bitcoin remains steady near $64,250, posting a weekly gain of 1%, with Solana leading the pack among major cryptocurrencies.

Solana has advanced 2% to trade near $77, accumulating a 1% increase for the week. Ethereum has climbed 1% to just above $1,900, bringing its weekly advance to 1.5%. XRP has edged up nearly 1% to just under $1, although it remains down 2% over the past seven days. Tron has gained 0.5% to 33 cents, while Dogecoin has also risen 0.5% to 7 cents. Binance Coin has slipped slightly to just above $600, marking a 2% weekly decline. Hyperliquid's HYPE token has fallen over 1% to just above $58, yet it still leads the major altcoins with a 7% weekly gain.

Traditional financial markets, however, are facing escalating turbulence. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have both seen their shares drop over 7%, dragging South Korea's main index down more than 6% and pushing the MSCI Asia Pacific Index lower by 2%. Asian semiconductor indices have also tumbled over 3%, following Tuesday's 5% slide in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, its worst single-day performance since late July.

The global selloff has driven U.S. 30-year Treasury yields to their highest levels since 2007, while the 10-year yield hovers near levels last seen in early 2025. This rise in long-term borrowing costs is adding pressure on artificial intelligence infrastructure companies that rely heavily on debt financing. On Wednesday, U.S. Treasury prices stabilized, with the 10-year yield easing about 1 basis point to 4.69%. Gold, after dropping nearly 2% on Tuesday, has rebounded 0.6% to trade above $4,360 per ounce.

Investors are now turning their attention to the Federal Reserve, with the July meeting minutes due for release at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled to speak at the Jackson Hole symposium next week. According to a Reuters survey, 94 out of 104 economists expect interest rates to remain in the 3.50% to 3.75% range in September, with market pricing suggesting roughly a 68% probability that rates will stay unchanged.
