Overseas Investors Post First Monthly South Korean Stock Purchase in Seven Months Amid August Flows

Data released by the Bank of Korea on Thursday reveals a notable shift in foreign investment patterns, with international investors turning into net buyers of South Korean equities during August. This development brings an end to a prolonged divestment streak that had persisted for seven consecutive months, despite a backdrop of elevated geopolitical tensions and rising bond yields.

The central bank's figures show a net purchase of $400 million in Korean stocks by foreign investors last month. This marks a stark turnaround from July, when they recorded net sales of $20.7 billion. The preceding seven months of 2024 had consistently seen foreign investors maintaining their status as net sellers in the Korean equity market.

The Bank of Korea attributed this change in sentiment to improved market conditions, largely fueled by robust earnings reports from major US technology corporations. This positive momentum helped counterbalance concerns over renewed instability in the Middle East and ongoing anxieties regarding potential overinvestment in artificial intelligence infrastructure, prompting investors to make substantial acquisitions of local Korean shares.

In contrast, the bond market experienced a different flow dynamic, as foreign investors increased their divestment from South Korean debt securities. Net selling of bonds reached $4.53 billion last month, a significant escalation compared to the $960 million in net disposals recorded during the preceding month.
