South Korean Stocks Plunge, Raising Questions About Whether a Rebound Will Follow This Time

A wave of intense selling sent South Korea's KOSPI index tumbling by 10.84%. While the decline is staggering, it ranks only as the fourth-largest single-day drop in the index's history.

This sell-off is still unusual, however. Unlike the 12.06% record plunge on March 4th, which was triggered by the outbreak of the US-Iran war, this time there was no clear or dominant catalyst. Instead, Tuesday's session resembled a capitulation event, with the dip-buying that frequently dominated markets earlier this year remaining conspicuously absent.

As the Asian afternoon session progressed, the selling momentum began to ease. Investors are now watching closely to see if Wednesday will deliver a strong rebound similar to the 9.6% surge seen on March 5th, the day after the all-time record crash. Regardless, the index remains up approximately 40% for the year, although this is a far cry from the massive 116% gain recorded at the close on June 22nd.
