Is There an AI Bubble? Unitree Humanoid Robot Responds: Only Time Will Tell

The debate over an artificial intelligence bubble has become the hottest topic in the tech industry this year, and even a robot has weighed in with its own perspective.

KOID is a compact and slender humanoid robot, featuring a body made of black metal and a face distinguished by a prominent ring of light. This robot was created by the renowned Chinese tech company Unitree Technology, and its name coincidentally matches a robotics-focused Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) launched by KraneShares in June of this year.

This past Tuesday, the walking, talking robot stated during an interview that the debate over an AI bubble is undoubtedly a "hot topic," but regarding whether the current AI frenzy will evolve into a bubble on the verge of bursting, KOID offered a neutral viewpoint.

KOID said, "Currently, the field of artificial intelligence is indeed experiencing a surge of excitement, but whether this constitutes a bubble or a transformative wave, only time can provide the answer."

The AI-powered robot added that both artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics technology "are here to stay" and will continue to iterate and upgrade.

KOID belongs to Unitree's G1 series, with a total weight of approximately 34.9 kilograms and possessing 23 degrees of freedom, meaning 23 independently movable joints, enabling it to perform a series of full-body movements such as dancing and boxing.

Currently, KOID is available for purchase on RoboStore, the largest US distributor of Unitree robots, with the series priced between $8,990 and $128,900.

Teddy Haggerty, CEO of RoboStore, said in an interview this Tuesday that although KOID can be programmed to perform various tasks, the robotics industry is still in a "prototype exploration" phase, where people are still figuring out the suitable applications for such robots in daily life.

Haggerty asked, "What do we truly want robots to do? Should they become our new butlers? Advance manufacturing? Or replace human jobs?"

However, KOID itself seems more certain about its own future. It stated that robots have the potential to become "more versatile and more integrated into life."

The robot claimed, "They will play roles in multiple fields, from home assistants to industrial tasks, making life more convenient and efficient."

Over the past year, competition in the humanoid robot sector has intensified dramatically, with companies like Boston Dynamics and Agility Robotics entering the fray. Tesla's Optimus robot has particularly captured industry focus, with its CEO Elon Musk stating that Optimus will be a key driver for increasing Tesla's market valuation in the future.

At various exhibition events, including the World Robot Conference and the World Humanoid Robot Olympics, Unitree Technology has outperformed its industry competitors.

The company, which is planning an Initial Public Offering (IPO) with a potential valuation of up to $7 billion, launched its latest H2 series humanoid robot earlier this year.
