Recently, according to multiple media reports, Elon Musk's SpaceX posted a job listing seeking a sushi chef. The physical requirements in the advertisement have sparked attention and discussion.
The listing shows the role is for a junior sous chef (sushi). Responsibilities include managing and monitoring kitchen inventory and ingredients, assisting in developing menu specifications, maintaining food quality according to standards, ensuring the safety of kitchen and cafe spaces, and overseeing food preparation in the front of house. Sushi kitchen experience is preferred.
The position has demanding physical requirements. Applicants must be able to stand for up to 10 hours per day, and may need to push or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance for 2 hours or more each day, lift or carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds, accumulate up to 6 hours of kneeling or squatting in a single day, and adapt to a kitchen environment exceeding 80 degrees Fahrenheit (about 26.7 degrees Celsius).
According to reports, the hourly wage for the role is $32.5 to $35 (about 216 to 233 yuan), with monthly income of $7,000 to $8,000 (about 46,000 to 53,000 yuan). However, due to U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) controls, only U.S. citizens or green card holders may apply.
Regarding these strict and highly repetitive physical requirements, some online users speculated that SpaceX appears to be hiring a sushi chef to collect behavioral training data for a robotics project, in order to train robots to learn related movements.
