Fresh Corn Arrivals Begin to Weigh on Starch Market Pricing

As the window for new-season corn supply opens, spot prices for corn starch continue to show weakness. The gradual influx of freshly harvested corn is adding downward pressure on production costs, which is expected to keep the market under strain in the near term.

Market participants anticipate that domestic corn starch spot prices will likely trend lower after a period of stability. Key factors to monitor include the pace of new corn deliveries in North China and the rate at which new production capacity comes online.

How New Supply Is Affecting Prices

Spot prices for corn starch have been drifting lower recently. With spring corn from parts of Shandong and Henan starting to reach the market, the availability of new-season grain is rising. This has weakened cost support, prompting several producers to cut prices in an effort to stimulate orders.

Demand from downstream users is recovering slowly, and overall market activity has improved compared with earlier in the season. End-users and traders have become more active in restocking, with some regions reporting tight supplies for small-packaged products.

Data shows that as of September 2, spot prices in Shandong were in the range of 2,780 to 2,840 yuan per ton, down 0.65% week on week on an average basis. In Heilongjiang, prices stood at 2,580 to 2,650 yuan per ton, a weekly average decline of 0.95%.

With the arrival of new corn, market sentiment has weakened noticeably, and buyers are adopting a cautious approach toward bulk purchases. Although futures markets have shown strength recently, partly due to weather-related factors, this has not translated into any meaningful impact on the physical corn starch market.

Cost Pressures Begin to Ease

In North and Central China, early-maturing and relay-cropped corn from Shandong and Henan is now reaching the market, steadily increasing total supply. Major corn processing enterprises in North China have already begun purchasing new-season corn. Data from the past week shows that truck arrivals at mainstream deep-processing plants in Shandong have stabilized at 600 to 700 vehicles per day, with the share of new corn in total procurement rising steadily. Raw material supply has now returned to normal levels.

Barring any extreme weather disruptions, expectations for a bountiful corn harvest in North China remain strong, pointing to increasingly ample supply. In response, major processors are lowering their corn purchase prices to ease cost and margin pressures. This has reduced cost support for the corn starch market, keeping spot prices under pressure.

Operating Rates Recover as Costs Ease

The operating rate in the corn starch industry has rebounded, adding to supply-side pressure. As the supply of new corn increases and cost pressures subside, some plants in Shandong and Shaanxi that had previously halted or reduced production have resumed normal operations. In other regions, operating rates remain stable with no significant changes.

As of September 2, the national operating rate for the corn starch industry stood at 60.16%, up 2.85 percentage points from the previous week.

Inventory Levels Decline Amid Gradual Demand Recovery

Industry inventories have been easing from recent highs as downstream demand shows signs of life. With schools reopening across various regions, household-market shipments have improved considerably. Tight supplies of small-pack products and stronger restocking interest from end-users and traders have helped reduce inventory pressure.

As of September 2, total corn starch inventory in the country's main producing regions stood at 916,200 tons, down 23,600 tons from the previous week, a decline of 2.51%. Compared with the same period last year, inventories were down 1.79%.

Market Outlook: Further Downside Likely

With the start of the new-season corn delivery window in North China, abundant fresh supplies are gradually entering the market, and cost-side pressures are expected to continue weighing on corn starch spot prices. Given the lack of strong support from downstream demand and trade channels, prices appear to be entering a phase of searching for demand at lower levels.

In the short term, domestic corn starch spot prices are likely to hold steady first before turning downward. The expected trading range for Shandong is projected at 2,750 to 2,800 yuan per ton. However, since new corn is still in the early stages of market entry, the transmission of raw material costs to downstream products will take time.

Market attention should focus on the pace of new corn arrivals in North China and the timeline for new production capacity to come on stream.
