According to a recent report, Google has informed its suppliers of its intention to relocate all manufacturing of its Pixel smartphones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds outside of China starting in 2027. If this timeline is adhered to, Google aims to complete this production shift by that year, establishing Vietnam and India as its primary manufacturing centers. This adjustment is part of Google's broader supply chain diversification strategy, designed to reduce its exposure to geopolitical and trade risks associated with China.

This move is reported to make Google the second major handset maker, following Samsung, to significantly shift its smartphone production away from China. Sources add that Vietnam and India are increasingly becoming pivotal manufacturing hubs. Google has already successfully produced high-end Pixel smartphones in Vietnam, which has boosted management's confidence in setting a 2027 target for completing the production migration. India is also emerging as a more critical manufacturing base for the company, with ongoing efforts to expand local Pixel production, including more advanced models.

Despite rising component costs, Google anticipates an 8% to 10% increase in Pixel smartphone shipments this year. In 2025, Pixel smartphone shipments were approximately 12 million units. To address cost escalations, Google is also consolidating its memory chip procurement across its cloud computing and smartphone divisions. This strategy is intended to enhance its bargaining power with suppliers such as Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix.

Where to begin: This strategic shift is a significant development for the tech industry, and investors will be closely watching Google's execution of these plans. The diversification of manufacturing is a key trend to monitor for potential impacts on global supply chains and the company's operational efficiency.

Why this specific production move matters: This decision is driven by the need to mitigate risks and optimize costs. By moving production to Vietnam and India, Google aims to create a more resilient supply chain. Additionally, consolidating memory chip purchases is a clear attempt to manage input costs effectively, a critical factor for maintaining profitability in the competitive smartphone market.
