Reported on September 29 — Chengdu Metro's luggage storage service has expanded once again, with lockers at a second batch of 25 stations being gradually put into use, according to Chengdu Rail Transit Group.

When the first pilot program launched in April 2026, it covered only two stations: Dongjiao Memory and Panda Avenue. Today, the number of stations equipped with luggage storage lockers across the network has grown to 25.

In April 2026, the first batch of luggage lockers was piloted at Dongjiao Memory Station and Panda Avenue Station. Scanning a code to store luggage takes just 30 seconds, with drop-off and pickup available anytime, quickly building a positive reputation. As of now, the first batch of lockers has handled a cumulative 5,766 items and served 5,560 passengers.

As more people used the service, new demands emerged. "I visited Chengdu during the Dragon Boat Festival and stored my luggage at a metro station for the first time. I thought it was so convenient, but during the holiday the large lockers were a bit insufficient," said Mr. Xi, a tourist from Shaanxi — a "complaint" that echoed the sentiments of many early users.

Mr. Xi's suggestion was quickly addressed. On a return trip to Chengdu during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the new lockers at Botanical Garden Station impressed him: "The location is more prominent, there are more large lockers, and a 28-inch suitcase fits easily."

The second batch of 25 stations responds precisely to these expectations. This batch includes both new stations joining for the first time and the two earliest pilot stations — Dongjiao Memory and Panda Avenue — which have both been incorporated into the expansion with additional locker points. Site selection prioritizes transportation hubs, major transfer stations, and areas around scenic spots and commercial districts, including Tianfu Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 Station, Xinglong Lake Station, Chengdu West Railway Station, Western China International Expo City Station, and Luomashi Station, among others — 27 locations in total.

Functions and pricing remain consistent with the first batch, though at stations with higher concentrations of out-of-town visitors — such as Botanical Garden Station and Shuangliu West Station — the proportion of large lockers has been increased.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, tourist Ms. Chen was heading to the Panda Base and spotted the storage lockers as soon as she went up the escalator at Military General Hospital Station. "I stored my luggage and went to see 'Huahua' hands-free." Her experience is a microcosm of metro services moving from "single-point convenience" to "full-journey friendliness."

"The luggage locker is small, but it connects to the passenger travel experience. Every site selection and every locker-type adjustment must take passenger and tourist satisfaction as an important standard," said Zeng Di, head of the Commercial Operations Center at Chengdu Rail Transit Resource Management Co., Ltd.

According to him, ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival, four stations — Botanical Garden Station, Military General Hospital Station, Shuangliu West Station, and Zhujiang Road Station — were the first to roll out the new luggage storage service. Around the National Day holiday, locations such as Luomashi Station, Shenxianshu Station, and Qingyang Palace Station will also be gradually put into use, with more than 100 storage points to be implemented within the year.

A same-city luggage delivery function is also under study. In Zeng Di's words, the goal is to "open up the last mile of convenient services."

Alongside the expansion of storage lockers, other passenger amenities at stations are also keeping pace. Thirty-five breakfast points have been gradually established, 44 secondary development (SCO) shops are flourishing at multiple locations, and more than 1,100 self-service devices can be seen everywhere. Eating, charging, resting, and storing luggage can all be handled "one-stop" within the station.

From a single storage locker to breakfast options, shops, and self-service devices in stations, Chengdu Metro is gradually integrating travel, consumption, culture and tourism, and leisure — making "eat with confidence, shop with confidence, travel with confidence in Chengdu" within easy reach.
