Oracle reduced its workforce by approximately 21,000 employees in the last fiscal year, a larger scale of reduction than previously known, including positions eliminated due to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI).

In a regulatory filing on Monday, the company stated: "Our adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our business has resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce."

Oracle indicated that its total global full-time employee count fell to 141,000 as of May 31, down from 162,000 the prior year. This workforce reduction resulted in restructuring costs of approximately $1.8 billion.

The company is facing financial pressure due to significant investments in building AI data centers for clients such as OpenAI. Reports had previously indicated that Oracle began cutting thousands of positions earlier this year to conserve capital.
