Abu Dhabi Greenlights $6.2 Billion Gas Project to Bolster UAE Supply Capacity

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has received approval for a $6.2 billion investment to develop the offshore Umm Shaif gas field project.

This project is expected to add over 600 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas capacity by 2030.

As global buyers seek stable gas supplies, Abu Dhabi aims to position itself as a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter.

Key Developments

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company will invest $6.2 billion to develop the Umm Shaif gas cap, a major offshore field, as part of its strategy to expand gas production and increase LNG exports.

The strategic importance of this project is underscored by disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for about one-fifth of global LNG trade, highlighting vulnerabilities in the global energy supply chain.

The Umm Shaif field, Abu Dhabi's longest-operating offshore field, will be developed by a consortium including TotalEnergies, Eni, and China National Petroleum Corporation.

ADNOC stated that once operational, the field will produce over 600 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas and associated condensate, equating to nearly 10% of the UAE's current daily domestic gas consumption. The project is slated for startup before 2030.

The UAE holds the world's seventh-largest proven natural gas reserves and produces over 4 million barrels of crude oil per day. This investment is designed to monetize domestic gas reserves, strengthen national energy security, and bolster the country's position in the global LNG market.

Having exited the OPEC oil producers' group this year and freed from its production quotas, Abu Dhabi plans to raise its crude oil production capacity to over 5 million barrels per day next year.

Strategic Objectives

ADNOC's Chief Executive, Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, said in a statement, "With global gas demand continuing to rise, ADNOC is delivering on its integrated gas strategy to unlock the UAE's abundant natural gas resources, expanding our LNG export platform to markets around the world."

For over six decades, the Umm Shaif field has been a cornerstone of Abu Dhabi's energy sector, home to the emirate's first offshore well, with oil from the field marking the UAE's first crude exports in 1962.

This investment sends a clear signal of Abu Dhabi's ambition to become a leading global supplier of natural gas and LNG. As extraction, trading, and export capabilities grow, ADNOC has set a target to achieve an annual LNG production capacity of 47 million tonnes by 2035.

Market Context and Imperatives

Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East continue to disrupt global energy markets, with near-total interruptions to transit through the Strait of Hormuz severely limiting shipments from major producers like Qatar. This underscores the critical importance of secure gas supplies and adds urgency to this gas development strategy.

Approximately one-third of the UAE's domestic gas supply is sourced via a pipeline agreement with Qatar, which is set to expire in 2032, making the acceleration of domestic gas capacity development an imperative.
