Whale Wallets Amassed 60K Bitcoin in August as Retail Exodus Hints at a Potential Bottoms-Up Shift

The Bitcoin market is showing early signals of a cyclical turnaround, driven primarily by a growing divergence in how large holders and everyday investors are allocating their coins. On-chain data reveals that while retail participants continue to pare back their exposure, institutional-grade buyers are stepping in to absorb the supply, a structural shift that could underpin the market's recovery from its prolonged slump.

This trend is further supported by a recovery in key technical indicators. CryptoQuant's cycle momentum indicator, which had remained in negative territory for eight consecutive months, has recently climbed back above the zero line, currently reading around 0.4. This metric is generated by comparing the profit/loss index against its 365-day moving average. Analyst Gaah notes that while this signals an increasing probability of breaking the downtrend, confirmation of a valid reversal would require the indicator to rise further into the 20–30 range in the coming weeks as prices recover.

The breakdown of holding patterns makes this divergence even clearer. Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that between August 1 and August 30, whale wallets holding over 100 BTC accumulated approximately 60,000 BTC. At the prevailing price of roughly $78,000 during that period, this represents an investment of up to $4.7 billion. In contrast, mid-sized holders with between 1 and 100 BTC reduced their positions by about 33,000 BTC, while retail investors owning less than 1 BTC sold off nearly 14,000 BTC.

This pattern of whales accumulating while retail exits, coupled with Bitcoin's breakout from the $62,000-to-$65,000 trading range on August 19 and its subsequent climb to $81,000, confirms that demand is absorbing available supply. However, short-term risks remain. CryptoQuant data shows that BTC reserves on Binance have risen to approximately 687,000 coins, the highest level since 2026. While high exchange reserves can trigger concerns about potential sell pressure, this uptick more likely reflects shifts in custody arrangements, collateral requirements, or trading activity rather than outright distribution.

With institutional investors re-entering the market and robust ETF inflows continuing, increased spot demand is now aligning with institutional capital, driving sustained on-chain accumulation.
