Leverage Miscalculation Drives STRC Down 25%: CEO Analysis and Buyback Strategy

The 25% plunge in STRC shares has been directly attributed by Strategy CEO Phong Le to a serious underestimation of leverage scale in the market, as he detailed in an interview with Natalie Brunell. This core issue has exposed the company's struggle to navigate irrational market swings following its high-yield preferred stock issuance, prompting a recalibration of its strategic approach.

The decline was fueled by an imbalance in arbitrage dynamics. The $9.3 billion preferred stock STRC carries a 12% annual dividend and should theoretically trade near its $100 par value, yet late June saw it drop to roughly $75 as loan pressures triggered by falling Bitcoin prices forced investors to sell for margin calls. Le admitted he had not anticipated the massive influx of leveraged capital, with investors borrowing at around 6% interest to capture the spread. Following fresh buying in the $75 to $90 range and personal purchases by Le himself, the price has now recovered to $99. This leverage-driven volatility has laid bare how vulnerable high-yield assets remain when linked to the crypto market's swings.

Where the recovery plan stands

The response has centered on restoring financial fundamentals. A late June strategy involved tapping cash reserves, authorizing buybacks, and selling Bitcoin if necessary, with STRC repurchases resuming in late July. While the dividend yield has climbed to 12%, these high payouts drain cash and burden common shareholders, making buybacks a tool to reduce future dividend obligations. The company currently holds roughly $5.1 billion in cash, enough to cover about three years of dividends, though those funds are restricted to preferred dividends and convertible bond interest. Buyback capital comes from selling common stock in MSTR (MSTR.US) and potentially Bitcoin. Le noted that 95% of his compensation is tied to MSTR (MSTR.US) share performance, and he advises investors to evaluate value with a three-year horizon.

Shifting from speculation to long-term ownership

The market structure is evolving as institutional holders of STRC have increased their stake from 20% to approximately 30%. Le believes that as long-term investors displace leveraged traders, the price will climb back to $100. He drew vivid comparisons, describing STRC as a passenger plane, BTC as a fighter jet, and MSTR (MSTR.US) as a rocket, underscoring their distinct risk-return profiles. The next dividend will be recorded on September 30 and paid on October 15, a date that will serve as a key test of market stability.
